VoiceMemo – All (U.S.) Instincts
VoiceMemo 2 allows recording and playback of multiple messages. Use email to share your voice memos with other VoiceMemo 2 owners.
Supported Phones: Instinct S30 (m810)
ATTN: M850 owners – This app does NOT work on the m850 – see my Voice+ Recorder app for one that works on the HD.
This is the last version for VoiceMemo and no more improvements are planned. Our Voice+ Recorder app is a better app and we will concentrate on it. If you own the VoiceMemo app, you can buy the Voice+ Recorder app for $1.00 USD.
VoiceMemo 2 allows multiple messages up to a maximum of 30 minutes in length. Options allow you to shorten the maximum length to 5 or 15 minutes. Memos can be emailed using the built-in email client on the phone – you can specify a default email address to mail to.
You can email memos to other Instinct users who have this program and they can then listen to your message. Or, for playback on your PC use the PureVoice Player available free from Qualcomm.
ATTN: Canadian Buyers – This app requires access to the MMAPI API for recording and the File Connection API for storage of the recorded voice memos. Sprint has opened these APIs on both models, however, I do not know how the Canadian carriers handle their firmware updates. Please contact your carrier for information on if/when you can get an update for your phone to unlock the APIs – until these APIs are open and available for use by unsigned apps, Voice Memo will not work on your phone.
Original Instinct Model M800: This app works fine on the m800 original Instinct – be sure and update to the latest software.

This is a handy app. However I wish it would allow you to add on to an existing recording that has been saved (not paused).

The application works great. The only major drawback is that it is limited to 30mins recordings. It would be so great if one could turn the instinct into a fullblown voice recorder. Any chance that you guys could change the time limitation? Thanks. Keep up the good work …

the time limit is a function of memory available to the Java app environment – it has nothing to do with the microSD card size until we go to save the actual recording. We record to memory, then save to the microSD card – we’re using all the application memory that is available to us – if Sun/Sprint/Samsung would give us double the RAM, then we could double the recording length.

Good to know. Is that different than recording video with the phone. Video allows continuous recording for as long as the SD card has available memory. Just wondering. Thanks for all of your help!

Audio and video recording should not be a lot different except for the amount of data collected.
There may be other programming techniques and/or languages available to handle longer recording times. I’m not sure if the video recording app is written in JAVA, BREW or something else.
It’s like streaming media – that’s obviously possible with the TV app on the phone – I have yet to get it to work using JAVA.
But I digress – when I originally started researching this app, 30 minutes seemed typical for other apps of this type on other platforms, so that’s what I was shooting for. I can actually get closer to 40 minutes.
Anything longer than that would require a major rewrite if it’s even possible in JAVA. The developer docs avail are not the greatest, so much of it is trial and error.

Fantastic. I’ve wanted this capability from day one and I gotta say I’m not all that sorry Sprint dropped the ball, especially considering how responsive and accessible you’ve been. Well worth the price. Thanks!

Great app. Works well. I will certainly use this frequently. Thanks for your quick response to a few issues I had.
For those interested, if you want to play the messages on your computer, the PureVoice program from Qualcomm is small and installs easily so don’t hesitate to install it on your computer.

No sorry – neither is possible with the current hardware. The m800 and m810 only allow one app to run at a time – don’t know about the m850 yet.
